Tonight, why Not Rye? Give Sazerac Rye a try at – The Distillery Bar Beijing!

Ok I admit I’ve been on bit of a gin binge recently with a lot of blog posts about new gins, Thomas Henry tonic water, etc. Maybe it’s because this week I just distilled 2.5 liters of my new #6 Gin recipe at the distillery [organic German juniper berries, Organic American Coriander, Indian cardamon, fresh orange peel, fresh rosemary, Sri Lankan Cinnamon, Madagascar vanilla bean, and star anise] – but I digress.

It’s time to talk about some of the other spirits on our shelf! Let’s talk Rye. Have you tried it? Sazerac Rye is distilled by Buffalo Trace so that should easily let you know this is quality product meant to satisfy the most discreet craft drinkers.

But what is rye and how is it different from bourbon whiskey? First off unlike bourbon, Rye’s main ingredient is well you guessed it rye – not corn. Sazerac’s mix is rye mashbill of 51% rye, 39% corn and 10% malted barley to be more precise. It’s also aged in charred NEW oak barrels at not more than 62.5% ABV by law. If aged for over 2 years, it can be called “straight” or “straight rye whiskey”.

It’s a much darker and more red in color than most table bourbons of the same age, and as for the taste profile Sazerac Rye has hints of cloves, cinnamon, anise and warm rye seed. To the palate the Rye is warm and almost completely dry. Enjoy the spices of peppermint, ginger and vanilla caramel.

It’s this spicy and fruity flavor that distinguishes a rye from a bourbon. Enjoy it straight on ice or in a famous Sazerac Rye cocktail.

You can also sample Sazerac Rye in our Bourbon Whiskey tasting flight at the Distillery by Capital Spirits.
